Braking resistors for electric pod drives

Electric pod drives in modern ships place high demands on braking performance and operational safety under extreme conditions. FRIZLEN’s robust braking resistors in stainless steel housings are specifically designed for this application. They offer high load capacity, corrosion resistance, and long-term maintenance-free operation – even in environments with high humidity, salt spray, and temperature fluctuations.

During braking operations, the resistors convert the electrical energy released during deceleration into heat, preventing overload of the frequency converters. By precisely dimensioning the braking power according to the drive profile and application scenario, efficient and safe braking processes can be achieved.

Steel grid resistor unit with IP23 protection rating, featuring a weatherproof roof in a zinc-plated all-around sealed steel enclosure with barrier grid at the bottom and the top. Optionally available with an enclosure in stainless steel 1.4301 or 1.4404, as well as with UL approval.

Starting resistors for bow thruster drives

Bow thrusters on ships require maximum thrust within a very short time – under demanding conditions such as high humidity, temperature fluctuations, and vibrations. Slip ring motors are often used for propulsion, where robust starting resistors are essential to limit current and enable controlled torque development.

FRIZLEN manufactures high-performance starting resistors specifically designed for this application, tailored to the requirements of maritime environments. Our solutions enable smooth start-up of the bow thruster, protect the drive system from overload, and ensure reliable readiness for operation – even with repeated starts at short intervals.

Preferred for this purpose are steel grid resistors (product group T600), which offer high load capacity, modular design, and excellent heat dissipation. They are available in various protection classes up to IP23. Depending on the power rating, the resistors are designed with natural convection or integrated fan cooling. For increased corrosion resistance, housings are also available in stainless steel grades 1.4301 or 1.4404.

Steel grid resistor unit up to a maximum of 66 kW continuous power, IP23 protection rating, self-ventilated, optionally available with stainless steel housing and UL approval.
